It’s a pity when you don’t get to see enough of a looker like Kunal Kapoor. Last seen in a cameo in Welcome to Sajjanpur in 2008, Kunal is returning with a Sanjay Dutt-starrer after a two-year gap. But the actor says that he’s been very busy during that time.
“I really don’t feel like I went away. I’ve been right here. When people ask me where I’ve been all this while, I feel, ‘Damn! It’s been really a long time.’ But I have been working on a script that I really like and the Sanjay Dutt film, which got delayed a bit.
For me, it’s a choice between doing unexciting things just to be visible and doing films that really excite me at the cost of being less prolific. I choose the latter,” he explains.
Is he overly picky about his roles? “It would seem so. But I don’t think I am. The way I look at it is that thousands come to Mumbai to become actors. Yet, there are only 25-30 of us who are lead actors. I shouldn’t take this position for granted by doing films just for the money. I get scripts every week; some of them have gone on to do well. But at the point when I was offered them, they didn’t seem that exciting,” says Kunal.
There’s Doga, a superhero film, in which he plays the title role. And he went to London recently to learn parkour for the role. “It’s a sport in which you rediscover your monkey gene,” laughs Kunal, adding, “I’m also doing a Navdeep Singh film based in Punjab.”
He says every actor’s career goes through a lull. “And I never feel, ‘Oh god, someone’s signing so many films and I’m not.’ I’m very happy where I am. I’m in a place where I’m famous enough to enjoy the perks of it, but not so famous that it affects the normalcy of my life. I’m not going to be in this position for long. Either I will move up or move out. But I’m not laid-back; I’m extremely driven. Achievement is not a barometer of what I do. I want to do films that are rooted in reality, not escapism,” shares Kunal.
